Rent Cars - Cheap Car Rental

People rent cars for different reasons. Typically, business people need one when they've travelled somewhere by train and need local transport. Holidaymakers hire cars to drive from the airport and see the sites while car owners may need to rent a car if their own vehicle is unavailable.

If you want to hire a car cheaply, there's plenty of choice around. There are comparison sites that will look at various providers and get you the best deal.

Additionally, there are specialist car rental agencies that will hire you a vehicle for specified periods. These agencies generally have branches at convenient locations such as airports and city centres, both at home and abroad. These often allow you to pick up a car at one branch and drop it off at another one when you reach your destination.

When renting a car, you'll need to provide a current driving licence and must be a minimum age, which for some companies is higher than the minimum driving age. You'll generally have to pay in advance and sign for the car. Before you do, it's in your interests to follow a few basic rules.

Don't necessarily hire the smallest and cheapest car. Make sure it's big enough for your passengers and luggage. Also, consider the safety and comfort of the car, especially if you're going on a long trip. If you're driving in a hot country, air conditioning may be essential.

Don't rent from an operator just because they have the cheapest offer. Sometimes you're better dealing with a reputable and internationally recognised company. At least, if you have problems abroad, you can contact the head office when you get back home. They're also likely to have the latest models, which are properly maintained and offer roadside assistance if you hit trouble.

Check the car carefully and make sure any bumps and scratches are noted on the inspection form. If they aren't, you might be expected to pay for the damage when you return the car. Make sure the tyres are in good condition, the lights work and fluid levels are correct.

Ensure you know the fuel type and that the content of the tank agrees with the recorded level. Putting the wrong fuel in or failing to top up the tank will cost you when you return the car. If you're hiring a car that's unfamiliar to you, make sure someone runs through the controls and that you have a copy of the handbook. Check what the hire rate includes and make sure you have adequate insurance cover. Only when you're happy with everything should you sign the rental agreement.
